Title: The Alaska Geological Materials Center Inventory
Abstract:
The Alaska Geologic Materials Center (GMC) in Eagle River holds non-proprietary rock core and cuttings that represent over 13 million feet of exploration and production drilling in Alaska. Additionally, the collection holds more than 252,000 linear feet of diamond-drilled hard-rock mineral core, representing more than 1,800 exploratory boreholes; 76,000 linear feet of oil and gas core and rock samples from more than 1,650 exploratory or production wells; samples for geotechnical boreholes; and numerous surface rock and sediment samples. The collection also includes extensive geochemical data and processed material derived from this rock. This publication represents the GMC inventory in accessible, intuitive digital formats for use by the general public.

The GMC inventory is available as a Keyhole Markup Language (KML) file, an international standard used by the Open Geospatial Consortium and can be viewed with Google Earth, NASA World Wind, or Microsoft Bing Maps 3D geobrowsers . Attribute information for the following files is included in this metadata file under the "Entity_and_Attribute_Information" section. GMC oil and gas and "hard-rock" mineral inventory summaries are also included as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. Files include:

      Horizontal positions are specified in geographic coordinates, that is, latitude and longitude. Latitudes are given to the nearest 0.000001 degree. Longitudes are given to the nearest 0.000001 degree. Latitude and longitude values are specified in Decimal degrees.

      The horizontal datum used is WGS 1984.

    Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
    The GMC materials inventory KML file contains four main folders: Alaska Core Inventory, Geologic Materials Center Information, the Alaska Inventory Legend, and Geologic Overlays for Alaska. The list of detailed descriptions below will describe the contents of first three folders listed above. The latter folder contains KML layers related to the Map of Alaska's coal resources (Merritt and Hawley, 1986), the Alaska Resource Data File (U.S. Geological Survey, 2008), and the Historical Mining Regions and Districts of Alaska (Sturmann and Clement, 1993) and are documented elsewhere (see the "Online_Linkage" entries in the "Lineage" section). The GMC inventory is updated continuously and, as a result, the main GMC inventory KML file utilizes network links to call and load the individual well and prospect layers over the Internet. This methodology allows the user to always have the most current GMC inventory information. As a result, an Internet connection is required to view each layer and load the inventory data.

    Mystery Dot

    A bug in Google Earth can disable HTML links in the placemark balloon from being shown as underlined. Placing a single <li> tag in the markup seems to ensure that all links are underlined.

    Example: 42-501-20130-03-00. The "42" means that this well is located in "State Code" 42 which is Texas. The "501" means that this well is located in "County Code" 501 which is Yoakum County. The "20130" is a "Unique Well Identifier" within the county. The "03" is the "Directional Sidetrack Code" for wells that have been sidetracked. The "00" is the "Event Sequence Code" to indicate how many operations have taken place (i.e. redrill).
