Description:
Abstract: The Alaska Geologic Materials Center (GMC) in Eagle River holds non-proprietary rock core and cuttings that represent over 13 million feet of exploration and production drilling in Alaska. Additionally, the collection holds more than 252,000 linear feet of diamond-drilled hard-rock mineral core, representing more than 1,800 exploratory boreholes; 76,000 linear feet of oil and gas core and rock samples from more than 1,650 exploratory or production wells; samples for geotechnical boreholes; and numerous surface rock and sediment samples. The collection also includes extensive geochemical data and processed material derived from this rock. This publication represents the GMC inventory in accessible, intuitive digital formats for use by the general public.
Purpose: A geologist's ability to perform modern analyses on these unique samples is paramount for responsible development of the State's vast resources. It is critical that access to and protection of this valuable resource be improved and updated. GMC staff has been acquiring additional inventory details and performing quality control on the information stored in the ever-growing GMC database. Although the main responsibility of the GMC is to preserve and ensure the safety of the physical material stored at the facility, it is equally important to make the material and derived data accessible to the public.

The GMC inventory is available as a Keyhole Markup Language (KML) file, an international standard used by the Open Geospatial Consortium and can be viewed with Google Earth, NASA World Wind, or Microsoft Bing Maps 3D geobrowsers . Attribute_Accuracy_Report: This dataset includes oil and gas well locations and mineral prospect locations related to the materials inventory at the GMC. The oil and gas well locations are provided by the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission well header http://doa.alaska.gov/ogc/publicdb.html. Mineral prospect locations are derived from the Alaska Resource Data File (ARDF), published for individual U.S. Geological Survey 1:250,000 scale quadrangles in Alaska, drilling logs, and the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) (USGS, 1981). The dataset also contains previously published data layers from Map of Alaska's coal resources (Merritt and Hawley, 1986), the Alaska Resource Data File (U.S. Geological Survey, 2008), and Historical Mining Regions and Districts of Alaska (Sturmann and Clement, 1993).
Logical_Consistency_Report: Polygon topology is present and clean on the previously published geospatial data layers. Other data are line, point, or annotation data and do not require topologic relationships.
Completeness_Report: The Alaska Geologic Materials Center is constantly acquiring additional inventory details and performing quality control on the information for hundreds of thousands of samples -- a process that will take many years to complete. As a result, the GMC strives to find a balance between the public release of samples with more accurate data versus suppressing sample information with partial and/or inaccurate data. The GMC is biased towards greater public access to our store of geologic wealth. Consequently, users of the facility must understand that inventory data may be inadequate or inappropriate for making certain decisions. Always contact the GMC staff to confirm that our released sample inventory will meet your research requirements. GMC staff is also willing, at this contact, to determine if other inventory options might also meet your current needs. Please contact us if you would like to contribute any documented corrections or additions to the GMC inventory data. Contributing maps, drill records, or any other documentation is especially welcome.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The estimated horizontal error of this dataset is +/- 250 meters. The location of some prospects were assigned by information available in Orth, 1971 and may have a coordinate that represents the center of many related boreholes (i.e. Amchitka Island). Mineral prospects of unknown location have been assigned a surface coordinate east of the Alaska GMC on the Earth (61.3493 N, -149.5398 W). Additional research is required to correctly identify these prospects and their true locations. Process_Description: Version 1.0 - Process Summary: Well and prospect locations related to the GMC inventory were converted to KML via a custom-built Microsoft Access script. All attribute information originates from GMC in-house inventory data, with the exception of the optional layers which can be enabled in the KML file. The GMC inventory is updated continuously and, as a result, the main GMC inventory KML file utilizes network links to call and load the individual well and prospect layers over the Internet. This methodology allows the user to always have the most current GMC inventory information. New well header information from the AOGCC is added into the GMC database on a regular basis, although the GMC does not necessarily have material inventory for all of the wells listed by the AOGCC. Prospect locations have been matched up with information provided in the ARDF for known prospects and boreholes. The GMC has several prospects and boreholes of unknown origin and additional research and user input is required to ascertain their location and drilling history. The location of some prospects were assigned by information available in Orth, 1971 and may have a coordinate that represents the center of many related boreholes (i.e. Amchitka Island). Mineral prospects of unknown location have been assigned a surface coordinate east of the Alaska GMC on the Earth (61.3493 N, -149.5398 W). Final changes to any HTML markup within the KML file was done in a text editor.
