Information about whether a volcano has been historically active is also provided. Detailed information about each center can be found on the Alaska Volcano Observatory website at http://www.avo.alaska.edu Purpose: To provide an authoritative file of volcano locations Supplemental_Information: The volcano locations in this file were compiled from existing publications whenever possible, and from USGS topographic maps when published locations could not be found. In the case of more than one published location for a volcano, additional maps of the volcano, as well as people who have expert knowledge of the volcano, were consulted. The layers listed below are present as ArcGIS shape files. Attribute information for the following layers (entities) is included in this metadata file under the "Entity_and_Attribute_Information" section. Each layer is listed and described in detail under its own heading starting "Entity_Type_Label." Layers include: >AKvolclatlong latitudes and longitudes of volcanoes Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Single_Date/Time: Calendar_Date: 200502 Currentness_Reference: publication date Status: Progress: Complete Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: Irregular Spatial_Domain: Bounding_Coordinates: West_Bounding_Coordinate: -178.793900 East_Bounding_Coordinate: 179.831680 North_Bounding_Coordinate: 67.300000 South_Bounding_Coordinate: 51.790300 Keywords: Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: ISO 19115 Topic Category Theme_Keyword: geoscientificInformation Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: none Theme_Keyword: Active Volcanoes Theme_Keyword: Volcanoes Place: Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: none Place_Keyword: Akutan Place_Keyword: Amchixtam Chaxsxii Place_Keyword: Atka Place_Keyword: Basalt of Gertrude Creek Place_Keyword: Black Peak Place_Keyword: Buzzard Creek Place_Keyword: Cone 3110 Place_Keyword: Cone 3601 Place_Keyword: Devils Desk Place_Keyword: Double Glacier Place_Keyword: Douglas Place_Keyword: Duncan Canal Place_Keyword: Dutton Place_Keyword: Emmons Lake Place_Keyword: Espenberg Place_Keyword: Folsoms Bluff Place_Keyword: Gordon Place_Keyword: Iliamna Place_Keyword: Imuruk Lake Place_Keyword: Ingakslugwat Hills Place_Keyword: Iron Trig Cone Place_Keyword: Kaguyak Place_Keyword: Knob 1000 Place_Keyword: Kochilagok Hill Place_Keyword: Kookooligit Mountains Place_Keyword: Kukak Place_Keyword: Kupreanof Place_Keyword: Makushin Place_Keyword: Martin Place_Keyword: Nelson Island Place_Keyword: Novarupta Place_Keyword: Nunivak Island Place_Keyword: Pavlof Place_Keyword: Pavlof Sister Place_Keyword: Porcupine Place_Keyword: Prindle Volcano Place_Keyword: Rainbow River Cone Place_Keyword: Skookum Creek Place_Keyword: Tanada Peak Place_Keyword: Teller Basalt Field Place_Keyword: Togiak Volcanics Place_Keyword: Unnamed 1 (near Kupreanof) Place_Keyword: Unnamed 2 (near Ukinrek Maars) Place_Keyword: Volcano 1 near Kupreanof Place_Keyword: Volcano 2 near Kupreanof Place_Keyword: Volcano 4 near Kupreanof Place_Keyword: Wrangell Temporal: Temporal_Keyword_Thesaurus: none Temporal_Keyword: Quaternary Access_Constraints: This data set is available directly from the State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (see contact information below). Native_Data_Set_Environment: Microsoft Windows XP SP2, ArcGIS 9.+, and any text editor. Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: The attributes of this geospatial dataset consist of text identifiers and numeric codes that indicate the name, latitude, and longitude of Alaska volcanoes younger than 2 million years. Volcanoes that have been active during historic time (as described in Miller and others, 1998, Catalog of Historically Active Volcanoes) are attributed with a "1" in the "Historical" column. To check attribute accuracy, plots of volcano names and locations were visually compared with other Alaska maps and volcano listings. Logical_Consistency_Report: This dataset consists only point data and does not require topology. Completeness_Report: This dataset includes volcano names of volcanoes in Alaska younger than 2 million years, as compiled in Miller and others (1998), Simkin and Siebert (1994), and Wood and Kienle (1990), as well as additional features located by Alaska Volcano Observatory geologists. In instances where the same feature is known by different names, this dataset attempts to use the most common name. In instances where a volcanic feature contains many smaller volcanic vents (for instance, Pyre Peak is a smaller vent at Seguam volcano), this dataset names only the larger feature. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Points were located by compiling previously published data, or in the case of no previously published location, heads-up screen digitization of mapped data using raster images of topographic base maps to an estimated horizontal accuracy of about 1,000 m.
