This report provides detailed (1:63,360-scale) mapping of portions of U.S. Geological Survey Circle B-2 (1955), B-3 (1955), B-4 (1952), C-2 (1955), C-3 (1955), and C-4 (1952) quadrangles. The area is part of the Circle mining district and adjacent to the Fairbanks mining district. This report includes detailed geologic, structural, stratigraphic, and geochronologic data. Based on the resulting geologic maps, field investigations, and laboratory materials analyses, the project has also generated derivative maps of geologic construction materials and geologic hazards.
The investigation of gold, and other mineral occurrences in conjunction with comprehensive geologic mapping and recently acquired geophysical data will provide a scientific basis for continued mineral exploitation that will economically benefit the region's inhabitants and the State of Alaska.
The 9 layers listed below are present as ArcGIS shape files. Attribute information for the following layers (entities) is included in this metadata file under the "Entity_and_Attribute_Information" section. Each layer is listed and described in detail under its own heading starting "Entity_Type_Label." Basic unit information is also included in the unit code set file "RI1995-2A_codeset.pdf."
Layers include:
>realcirgeo94_polygon geologic units
>realtstunion2_polygon Alternate view of the geologic units. Note that the bedrock polygons in this layer intersect the surficial unit polygons in locations where the units overlap. Users can use attribute values in this layer to selectivly trigger display of bedrock or surficial units. See the the attribute domain value definition of this layer for further explanation.
>realallsam_point sample locations for 1993 and 1994 field season
>realbedcon94_arc coded line surrounding bedrock units
>realcirstrat_point locations of stratigraphic sections measured in the field
>realfault94_arc coded lines describing faults
>realshear_arc coded line describing shears zones

Geologic data were digitized from a mylar geologic compilation. This compilation was done on a one to one scale, stable mylar of the USGS topographic base for each of the 1:63,360 scale USGS topographic bases included in the map area.Geologic data included in the compilation are the field maps and notes from this project. Surficial geological information was interpreted from false color infrared aerial photography and transferred to the basemap using a zoom transfer scope. The resulting compilation was then digitized with an average RMS error of .003 or less. The geologic interpretations presented in this report have undergone two technical reviews by geologists familiar with the subject of the report or geology of the map area. Reviewers' suggestions were incorporated into the final draft when deemed appropriate by the author.
The logical consistency of the polygon, point and line files has been visually checked but not systematically verified. Some topology errors are known to exist in the polygon files.
This dataset includes geospatial information about geologic units, sample locations for radiometric age dates, structural features and structural measurements. Many of the lithologic and anaylitical samples collected for this project are housed at the Alaska Geologic Materials Center (GMC).
Location data were determined visually using topographic maps at scales of 1:63,360 and larger. Altimeters were also used. GPS technology was not used to determine locations. Instead, geologic contacts, sample, and station locations were visually hand-plotted onto stable mylar bases from the field maps. The coordinates of sample and station locations were determined with a digitizing tablet. All samples plotted on the maps are included in the various tables.
100
The estimated horizontal error of this dataset is +/- 100 meters. Considering the errors inherent in the USGS topographic maps, locating oneself in the field, and the digitizing method, all localities, stations, and samples are located to an accuracy of between 10 and 100 meters.
The geologic data included in this project were digitized from a mylar compilation of geologic field maps produced on USGS topo bases of the area. Map unit (polygon) locations and attributes were checked by two reviewers broadly familiar with the dominant geologic rock types in the Fairbanks area. Locations were determined visually using topographic maps at scales of 1:63,360 and 1:25,000.Geologic contacts, sample, and station locations were visually hand-plotted onto stable mylar bases from the field maps.
1995
This project was included in a legacy data rescue effort. The metadata and distribution files were compiled long after project completion. The original ARC coverages for this dataset were damaged and subsequently reconstructed by the GIS manager. Lineage information and attribute value information not documented in this file is unavailable.
2008
The layer 'realtstunion2_polygon' was added to the metadata and distribution dataset.
