Publication_Date: 2001 Title: Engineering-geologic map of the Chulitna region, southcentral Alaska Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: map and vector digital data Series_Information: Series_Name: Report of Investigation Issue_Identification: RI 2001-1D Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Fairbanks, Alaska - USA Publisher: State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys Other_Citation_Details: 5 p., 1 sheet, scale 1:63,360 Online_Linkage: http://dx.doi.org/10.14509/3314 Description: Abstract: This map is the result of field investigations by DGGS in 1997 and 1998. This geologic map and report supersede the previously released Public Data File 1999-24D, Preliminary engineering-geologic map of the Healy A-6 Quadrangle, southcentral Alaska. The current map has been updated to include mapping of areas adjacent to the Healy A-6 Quadrangle. Field investigations were part of a two-year mapping program to provide geologic ground truth for airborne geophysical surveys flown by DGGS in the Chulitna region of southcentral Alaska during 1996. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to produce a 1:63,360-scale geologic map for the airborne geophysical surveys released by DGGS in the Chulitna region during 1996. The geologic data are important for identifying potential mineral deposits and for characterizing and distinguishing between geologic units. Supplemental_Information: The layers listed below are present as ArcGIS shape files. Attribute information for the following layers (entities) is included in this metadata file under the "Entity_and_Attribute_Information" section. Each layer is listed and described in detail under its own heading starting "Entity_Type_Label." No separate shape file was created for the "Landslide" polygons found on the printed Engineering-geologic map of the Chulitna region, southcentral Alaska (RI 2001-1D). These polygons were extracted from the shape file "chu_allsrfgeo_polygon", by querying the data for those polygons having the unit "Qcl" and imported into the engineering-geologic map. Although the shape file "chu_allsrfgeo_polygon" is part of the Surficial-geologic map of the Chulitna region, southcentral Alaska (RI 2001-1C), it is included in this dataset for completeness. Basic unit information is also included in the unit code set file "RI2001-1_codeset.pdf." Layers include: >chu_allsrfgeo_arc surficial geologic unit boundaries (arc) >chu_allsrfgeo_polygon surficial geologic units (polygon) >chu_linears_arc engineering geologic lineaments >chu_mat_arc engineering geologic unit boundaries (arc) >chu_mat_polygon engineering geologic units (polygon) >chu_sackung_arc engineering sackung boundaries (arc) >chu_sackung_polygon engineering sackung (polygon) Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Range_of_Dates/Times: Beginning_Date: 1997 Ending_Date: 2001 Currentness_Reference: publication date Status: Progress: Complete Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: None planned Spatial_Domain: Bounding_Coordinates: West_Bounding_Coordinate: -150.030246 East_Bounding_Coordinate: -149.090702 North_Bounding_Coordinate: 63.307690 South_Bounding_Coordinate: 62.958985 Data_Set_G-Polygon: Data_Set_G-Polygon_Outer_G-Ring: G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.25 G-Ring_Longitude: -150.00 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.25 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.50 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.22 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.50 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.22 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.37 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.30 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.37 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.30 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.17 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.26 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.11 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.25 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.11 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.01 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.50 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.00 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.50 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.00 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.51 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 62.97 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.56 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 62.97 G-Ring_Longitude: -149.92 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.00 G-Ring_Longitude: -150.00 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.01 G-Ring_Longitude: -150.00 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.02 G-Ring_Longitude: -150.03 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.10 G-Ring_Longitude: -150.03 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.12 G-Ring_Longitude: -150.00 G-Ring_Point: G-Ring_Latitude: 63.25 G-Ring_Longitude: -150.00 Keywords: Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: ISO 19115 Topic Category Theme_Keyword: geoscientificInformation Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: none Theme_Keyword: Geology Theme_Keyword: Engineering Theme_Keyword: STATEMAP Project Theme_Keyword: Geologic Hazards Theme_Keyword: Photogeologic Lineaments Place: Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: None Place_Keyword: Alaska, State of Place_Keyword: Chulitna Place_Keyword: Healy Quadrangle Place_Keyword: Southcentral Alaska Access_Constraints: This report, map, and/or dataset are available directly from the State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (see contact information below). The surficial-geologic information was transferred from acetate air-photo overlays to a paper 1:63,360-scale USGS topographic base using a zoom transfer scope. The surficial-geologic information was then digitized into Arc/Info GIS (ArcEdit module) using a large-format digitizing table with RMS registration errors constrained to be no larger than 0.003 inches (input coverage units) for each digitizing session. Geologic data included in the compilation are the field maps and notes from this project as well as data from other sources as noted in the "Sources Cited" section. Logical_Consistency_Report: Polygon topology present and clean on appropriate data; others are line or point data. Completeness_Report: This dataset includes geospatial information about engineering-geologic features. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Bedrock location data were determined visually using topographic maps at scales of 1:63,360 and larger. Altimeters were also used. Occasional use was made of hand-held GPS, but Selective Availability, a random 100-meter error assigned to GPS signals by the U.S. government, was in place at the time. Geologic contacts, sample, and station locations were visually hand-plotted onto stable mylar bases from the field maps. The coordinates of sample and station locations were entered into an Excel spreadsheet with a digitizing tablet. Station notes and sample descriptions were entered into an Excel spreadsheet. The lists of samples were visually checked against the lists of analyzed samples returned from the laboratories. It was verified that all the samples plotted on the maps are included in the various tables and spreadsheets. Surficial location data were determined visually using topographic maps at a scale of 1:63,360 and 1:50,000 (nominal) scale, color-infrared aerial photographs. Quantitative_Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 10 Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation: Approximate error in meters. Bedrock localities, stations, and samples are located to an accuracy of between 10 and 100 meters. Surficial-geologic map data have a horizontal positional accuracy dependent on: (1) the 1:50,000-scale (nominal) aerial photographs on which they are based, with an estimated potential error due to a pen line width of approximately 0.001 being equivalent to approximately 1.5 meters on the ground; (2) the accuracy of the human zoom transfer scope operator in tracing the line work from acetate overlays to topographic base maps, with an estimated error due to a pen line width of approximately 0.001 being equivalent to approximately 1.5 meters on the ground; (3) the accuracy of the zoom transfer process itself, error magnitude highly variable and unknown but potentially large; (4) the digitizing RMS error of 0.003 inches [input coverage units], which equates to approximately 5 meters on the ground for a 1:63,360-scale map; and (5) the accuracy of the human operator digitizing the geologic line work from the topographic base maps, with an estimated error due to a pen line width of approximately 0.001 being equivalent to approximately 1.5 meters on the ground. Total potential horizontal error for surficial-geologic map features is therefore estimated to be approximately 10 meters. An ArcInfo lookup table was made to assign geologic units (item UNIT) from the comprehensive map to appropriate engineering-geologic units (item MAT) based on the Unified Soil Classification System as described by Wagner (1957). This lookup table was applied to the ArcInfo polygon coverage containing the geologic units and a new engineering-geologic polygon coverage was generated using the "dissolve" command based on the new materials-unit item "MAT". Additional features were mapped from ground observations and interpretation of air photos, and digitized and attributed using ArcInfo. ArcPlot was used to generate plot files of the resulting materials coverage using DGGS-standard symbology, and the Arc graphics files were converted into .eps files for export to CorelDraw for final cartographic assembly.
