Title:
Livengood mining district electromagnetic and magnetic airborne geophysical survey, data compilation
Abstract:
The Livengood electromagnetic and magnetic airborne geophysical survey data were acquired with a DIGHEM-V Electromagnetic (EM) system and a cesium magnetometer. The EM and magnetic sensors were flown at a height of 30 meters (m). In addition the survey recorded data from radar and laser altimeters, a GPS navigation system, 50/60 Hz monitors and a video camera. Flights were performed with an AS-350-B2 Squirrel helicopter at a mean terrain clearance of 60 m along N-S survey flight lines with a spacing of 400 m. Tie lines were flown perpendicular to the flight lines at intervals of approximately 4,800 m

Why was the data set created?

The 1998 Livengood airborne electromagnetic and magnetic geophysical survey and this compilation are part of the Alaska Airborne Geophysical/Geological Mineral Inventory project funded by the Alaska State Legislature and managed by State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS). The project seeks to catalyze private-sector mineral development investment. Alaska State lands that: 1) have major economic value; 2) can be developed in the short term to provide high quality jobs for Alaska; and 3) will provide economic diversification to help offset the loss of Prudhoe Bay oil revenue. This purpose for this publication is to compile and upgrade key digital data into a single publication for online data distribution.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1998 (process 1 of 12)
Raw and processed point data along flight lines - These data are directly provided by the contractor. Raw data are a direct export from field collection instruments. Final data are processed by method according to the contractor provided reports and process steps in this document.

Data sources used in this process:

    • Fraser, D.C., 1978

    Date: 1998 (process 2 of 12)
Geophysical data - The geophysical data were acquired with a DIGHEM-V Electromagnetic (EM) system, a cesium magnetometer, and a Herz VLF system installed in on AS350B-2 Squirrel helicopter. In addition, the survey recorded data from a radar altimeter, GPS navigation system, 50/60 Hz monitors and video camera.

    Date: 1998 (process 3 of 12)
Total magnetic field data - The total magnetic field data were acquired with a sampling interval of 0.1 seconds, and were (1) corrected for diurnal variations by subtraction of the digitally recorded base station magnetic data, (2) leveled to the tie line data, and (3) interpolated onto a regular 100 m grid using a modified Akima (1970) technique. The regional variation (or IGRF values, 1995, updated to September, 1998) was removed, then the average IGRF value was added back to the leveled magnetic data creating the final simulated total magnetic field data. The aeromagnetic data were interpolated onto a regular 100 m grid using a modified Akima (1970) technique.

Data sources used in this process:

    • Akima, H., 1970

    Date: 1998 (process 4 of 12)
Inphase and quadrature components - The DIGHEM-V EM system measured inphase and quadrature components at five frequencies. EM data were sampled at 0.1 second intervals. The EM inphase and quadrature data were drift corrected using base level data collected at high altitude (areas of no signal). Along-line filters were applied to the data to remove spheric spikes. The data were inspected for variations in phase, and a phase correction was applied to the data if necessary. Resistivities were then calculated from the inphase and quadrature data for all frequencies based on a pseudo-layer half-space model. Manual leveling of the inphase and quadrature of each coil pair, based on the resistivity data and comparisons to the data from the other frequencies, was performed. Automated micro-leveling was carried out in areas of low signal. The EM system responds to bedrock conductors, conductive overburden, and cultural sources. The power line monitors and the flight track video were examined to locate cultural sources. The EM anomalies that are indicated are classified by conductance. These anomalies are described in files '*_emanomalies.csv' and '*_projectreport.pdf.'

    Date: 1998 (process 5 of 12)
Vector data in dxf, dwg, plt, and att file formats - vector data (examples: line path, data contours) were created by exporting data and interpretations to vector format.

    Date: 1998 (process 6 of 12)
Project report, portfolio report, and other important documents - The project report, portfolio report, and other important documents were generated by the contractor, DGGS staff, or a combination.

    Date: 2015 (process 7 of 12)
Legacy data compilation - DGGS staff compiled and organized previously published data and the originating data from the contractor. DGGS staff converted select hpp files into PDFs to complete the PDF map collection. Original vector data were compiled into an ESRI ArcMap File Geodatabase using ArcMap 10.2.2's CAD to Geodatabase tool in batch mode. In this publication's older products and documentation the magnetic data products have been referred to as Total Field Magnetics on the maps and the MAGIGRF channel in the line data and 'tfm' as a filename abbreviation. The new term 'sim_magtf' has been created to rename and clarify that the data are not representative of the true total magnetic field as the IGRF values have been removed with a single average IGRF value added back to the data, resulting in the IGRF gradient being removed. The term simulated magnetic total field and the filename abbreviation 'sim_magtf' is now used to identify the final magnetic data.

The final magnetic data was gridded using the Minimum Curvature option with the following settings: grid cell size = 1/5 of line spacing, blanking distance = double the line spacing, cells to extend beyond data = 0. The polygon file was created using Grid Outline tool with edge resolution = 1. The polygon file was exported to ERSI shapefile.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

    Apparent resistivity cutoffs:
900 Hz coplanar apparent resistivity cutoff 1008 Ohm-m
7200 Hz coplanar apparent resistivity cutoff 8250 Ohm-m

    Electromagnetic system sensitivity:
    Frequency; Coil Orientation; Sensitivity (ppm)
     900 Hz horizontal coplanar 0.06
     1000 Hz vertical coaxial 0.06
     5500 Hz vertical coaxial 0.10
     7200 Hz horizontal coplanar 0.10
     56,000 Hz horizontal coplanar 0.30

    Magnetic system sensitivity: 0.01 nT

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Positional accuracy of the presented data is better than 10 m with respect to the UTM grid.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Missing magnetic values occur in the databases for the survey area because of the lagging process at the beginning of some lines and due to despiking. Slow airspeed over steep terrain can cause rapid bird swing and magnetic data spikes that require removal from final data. Missing values in the calculated 'depth' occur where altimeter limits for resistivity calculation are exceeded or where magnetite causes inphase to be negative. Missing apparent resistivity values are generally caused by altitude exceeding the tolerance for meaningful resistivity calculation.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

Data originate from one company using the same contract specifications for all data. The originating coordinate system was retained for all publication products except the KMZ files, which utilize WGS84 geographic coordinates. In some cases we provide values in both UTM NAD27 and geographic WGS84 projections.
