Abstract:
Preliminary geologic map of the Nome C-1 Quadrangle, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Mineral Investigations Field Studies Map 247, presents a geologic map of the Nome C-1 Quadrangle; it shows the distribution of unconsolidated deposits, igneous rocks, metaigneous sills, and metasedimentary units at a scale of 1:63,360. Unconsolidated deposits include glacial, glaciofluvial, alluvial, eluvial, and coastal beach sediments of Pleistocene and recent age, with locally exposed older buried beach deposits. Igneous rocks are represented by a granitic aplite sill. Metaigneous units include metagranitic and metagranodioritic sills. Metasedimentary rocks comprise interbedded marble and schist, calcareous schist, quartzite-schist assemblages, marble units, graphitic and calcareous schist, and greenstone sills, many of which display gradational contacts and lithologic variability previously assigned to the Nome Group. The map provides detailed lithologic and structural information to support geologic interpretation and mineral investigations within the quadrangle. The dataset provides geologic, structural, stratigraphic, and geochronologic information organized according to the GeMS and AK GeMS mapping schemas.     Date: 1962 (process 1 of 2)
    Geologic mapping - Geologic mapping of the Nome C-1 Quadrangle was completed through field investigations that documented the distribution of unconsolidated deposits, igneous units, metaigneous sills, and metasedimentary rocks. Fieldwork included detailed observation and description of lithologies, stratigraphic contacts, structural features, and geomorphic relationships. Rock units were examined and classified based on mineralogy, texture, and weathering characteristics, and gradational contacts were traced and recorded where present. Unconsolidated deposits were mapped using surface morphology, sediment characteristics, and relative age indicators. Field data were compiled with existing geologic information to delineate unit boundaries and produce a preliminary geologic map at 1:63,360 scale. Final map compilation included organizing lithologic descriptions, standardizing unit terminology, and preparing the map layout for publication.

    Data packaging - DGGS organized and attributed the geologic and geographic features according to the AK GeMS schema, then programmatically transformed the data into four distribution formats: (1) an AK GeMS data package containing the full database and supporting files, (2) a GeMS data package converted to the USGS base standard, (3) a SQLite database file, and (4) a simplified shapefile package with shapefile representations of the data.

They supplied practical, site-specific geologic data intended to assist mineral investigations, land-management decisions, and regional geologic interpretation.
