Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: High-resolution lidar data for Alaska infrastructure corridors
Abstract:
In advance of design, permitting, and construction of a pipeline to deliver North Slope natural gas to out-of-state customers and Alaska communities, the Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) has acquired lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) data along proposed pipeline routes, nearby areas of infrastructure, and regions where significant geologic hazards have been identified. Lidar data will serve multiple purposes, but has primarily been collected to (1) evaluate active faulting, slope instability, thaw settlement, erosion, and other engineering constraints along proposed pipeline routes, and (2) provide a base layer for the state-federal GIS database that will be used to evaluate permit applications and construction plans. This dataset is an index used as a reference frame for the lidar delivery area.
Supplemental_Information:
This metadata file has been written to document and describe the location of all the raster files generated for this project. The DGGS metadata standard extends the FGDC standard to also include several elements that are required to facilitate our internal data management. These elements relate individual data items to a common dataset. This dataset describes a single layer titled: >raster-index: raster index used as a reference frame for lidar delivery area

    NAME
Indicates the specific quadrangle associated with the raster, based on USGS 1:63360 quadrangle map names. The attribute deviates from USGS quadrangle names for the Phillip Smith Mts and the Talkeetna Mts where Mts is replaced with MTNS. DEM_ID
DEM_ID indicates the specific DEM file associated with the raster data for a given tile. (Source: Watershed Sciences, Inc. and Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys)

The first five characters of each value correspond to the name of the USGS 1:63360 quadrangle. In order to create a more manageable file size for the raster data, some quadrangles were split into multiple portions (tiles), and an "a", "b", "c" or "d" was added to the end of the file name. For additional information pertaining to file naming conventions, see the overview report.

Why was the data set created?

Provide an index illustrating the spatial location of raster image files.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 2010 (process 1 of 3)
A vector shapefile was created as an index to show the organization of lidar raster files. USGS 1:63360 quadrangles were used as a basis for creating the index so that individual tiles fall within only one quadrangle. In some instances, quadrangles contain multiple tiles in order to minimize file size of the indexed raser files.

    Date: 2012 (process 2 of 3)
Raster index shapefiles from individual deliveries were combined into a single shapefile. During this process the data were reprojected into Alaska Albers Equal Area Conic.

    Date: 2012 (process 3 of 3)
A metadata file was created to describe the raster index file.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

Individual polygons within the vector shapefile, referred to as tiles, are used to designate raster data files. Tiles were created by Watershed Sciences, Inc. in consultation with DGGS and are referenced to 1:63360 USGS quadrangles with the exception of the Talkeetna Mts and Phillip Smith Mts quadrangles where Mts has been replaced with MTNS. Attribute values have been visually inspected to ensure accuracy.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Data was visually inspected to ensure horizontal positional accuracy.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Lidar data was checked for accuracy and completeness. Please refer to the lidar QC report and overview report for details about the raster index file.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

Data was visually inspected in ArcGIS to ensure consistency.
