Abstract:
Field station locations and magnetic susceptibility data collected in 2025 for the Steese Project, Yukon-Tanana Uplands, Alaska, Raw Data File 2025-28, provides locations, rock descriptions, and magnetic susceptibility measurements collected during DGGS's 2025 bedrock-mapping campaign in the Yukon-Tanana Uplands of eastern Interior Alaska. Geologists mapped at 1:100,000 scale across parts of the Big Delta, Circle, Fairbanks, and Livengood quadrangles, concentrating most fieldwork within the Steese project boundary. The 2025 campaign builds on earlier 1:250,000‑scale mapping, several detailed geologic studies, and ongoing DGGS-USGS collaboration to modernize and refine geologic data across the Yukon-Tanana Uplands. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) identified the map area as prospective for rare‑earth elements (REEs) and other critical and non‑critical mineral resources, prompting renewed attention to their mineral potential. These data are provided as a Raw Data File under an open end-user license and are available on the DGGS website: http://doi.org/10.14509/31736.

Why was the data set created?

The purpose of Steese project is to update and improve geologic data coverage in the Yukon-Tanana Uplands by building on previous mapping, incorporating detailed geologic studies, and supporting ongoing DGGS-USGS collaboration. These efforts focus on areas the U.S. Geological Survey has identified as prospective for rare‑earth elements and other critical and non‑critical mineral resources, providing information that supports resource evaluation, land‑use planning, and long‑term economic opportunities for the State of Alaska.

How was the data set created?

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 2025 (process 1 of 1)
    Field station descriptions - Location data for field stations were collected using GPS-enabled tablets or smartphones running the Esri Field Maps app, which have a reported error of 10-12 meters. Latitude and longitude were recorded in the WGS84 datum. Project geologists observed and interpreted rock and outcrop samples in the field or at the field office. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were taken using Terraplus KT-10 model handheld magnetic susceptibility meters. These meters have a maximum sensitivity of 1 x 10^-6 Systeme International (SI) units on smooth surfaces and can measure susceptibility within a range of 0.001 x 10^-3 to 1,999.99 x 10^-3 SI. The values reported here are based on individual measurements performed on representative surfaces of the sampled rock outcrops or hand samples. Up to 12 susceptibility readings were recorded at each field station. To minimize atmospheric effects, multiple sides of outcrops or hand samples were measured whenever possible. Magnetic susceptibility was not measured at a small subset of field stations due to intensely weathered hand samples or samples that were too small to cover the coil of the KT-10 meter for accurate measurement. These stations are presented with zero measurements for completeness.

    The accompanying report and data tables provide a comprehensive discussion of processing methods, with errors reported in the tables where applicable. This data is being released as part of the DGGS RDF series, which includes content describing approved techniques and methods for the collection, storage, visualization, analysis, and interpretation of scientific data. While the information has been reviewed by several geologists familiar with the study area, the data and report have not undergone formal review for technical content or conformity to DGGS editorial standards. For inquiries regarding analytical values or procedures, the originating lab is the best point of contact.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
    Location data for field stations were collected using GPS-enabled tablets or smartphones running the Esri Field Maps app. Data were merged into an ArcGIS geodatabase. The devices have a reported error of 10-12 m.
