Online_Linkage: https://doi.org/10.14509/31303 Description: Abstract: Seward Peninsula airborne electromagnetic survey, Kigluiak, Bendeleben, and Darby Mountains, Geophysical Report 2024-2, covers parts of the Teller, Bendeleben, Nome, and Solomon 1:250,000-scale U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) quadrangles on the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska. Time-domain electromagnetic data were collected with the SkyTEM 306HP system, which was towed by a helicopter, from September 8 to October 3, 2023, and from June 5 to July 18, 2024. A total of 4,330-line kilometers (km) were collected covering 4,817 km2. The survey was flown with semi-parallel lines spaced approximately 1 km apart and oriented perpendicular to regional geologic strike. Electromagnetic data were used to create resistivity models. The data, as well as additional metadata, are available from the DGGS website: http://doi.org/10.14509/31303. Purpose: Electromagnetic surveys record electric fields in the subsurface. Active-source electromagnetic surveys use a transmitter(s) to create a changing magnetic field, which induces electrical fields in the subsurface. These electric fields create a secondary magnetic field that is recorded by a receiver(s). These data demonstrate how conductive or resistive rocks and soils are to electrical current and can be used to determine properties including rock type, alteration, saturation, and whether soils and rocks are frozen or not. In this publication, the electromagnetic data were also used to create resistivity models. The data from the Seward Peninsula airborne electromagnetic survey will improve the understanding of the geology and mineral potential in the region and promote resource exploration of the Kigluaik, Bendeleben, and Darby mountains, with an emphasis on the potential graphite resources of the region. Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Not applicable Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Data collection, processing, and delivery - The airborne geophysical data were acquired under contract with SkyTEM Canada Incorporated. Airborne geophysical data for the areas were acquired and processed by SkyTEM Canada Incorporated. The contractor's project report and other supporting documents are in the 'documents' digital data package. They provide detailed documentation of the system specifications, data collection, processing, and delivery. For this survey, measurements were recorded along preplanned flight lines (the flight path). An approximately 10-millisecond-long discretized time series measurement containing multiple channels was recorded about every 2 meters along the flight path. The final processed, recorded time series data can be found in the ascii_data and database_geosoft data packages. These data, in conjunction with the supporting files in the documents data package, are suitable for data modeling and direct time series viewing. Modeling the time series data is done using the inversion process to create a resistivity model of the subsurface. The resistivity models in this publication are one-dimensional (1D) layered earth models of the time series measurements. Each 1D model may contain 20-30 layers. These individual models are combined to create a three-dimensional resistivity model of the survey area. Resistivity models are non-unique, meaning multiple resistivity models could create the recorded data. For this reason, interpreting resistivity models has the risk of being erroneous. One (or more) combined resistivity model may be provided in ASCII format in the models_resistivity data package. Depth slices are two-dimensional grids of each layer of the 1D models and are named by the layer number or depth range of the layer. Depth slice rasters of the combined resistivity model are provided in the grids_tiff, grids_geosoft, and kmz data packages. Maps of the flight path and select depth slice rasters are available as pdf maps in the maps_pdf_format data package. Lower-resolution versions of the pdf maps are also available at the end of this booklet.
