This work was primarily intended to identify earthquake hazards, but the investigators also documented the distribution of the geologic formations, some of their physical properties, and their uses. Many of the interpretations are based on earlier regional mapping and the behavior of similar deposits during earthquakes elsewhere, and others are based on laboratory tests of the physical properties of certain deposits.
