Online_Linkage: https://dggs.alaska.gov/pubs/id/24047 Description: Abstract: Reconnaissance study of the Taylor Mountains pluton, southwestern Alaska, Professional Paper 1776-A, provides the results of geologic mapping and petrologic analysis of a 68-63 Ma epizonal, composite biotite-granite stock. The pluton consists of two compositionally similar porphyritic biotite-granite phases whose contrasting textures reflect differing emplacement histories. Fractional crystallization of these magmas produced a minor volume of fine-grained residual granite that, although distinctly more felsic, shows limited enrichment in trace elements or volatiles. Mineral deposits in the region are dominated by placer occurrences, likely sourced from vein systems in the surrounding country rocks rather than from hydrothermal activity associated with pluton crystallization. Geologic evidence indicates that the Taylor Mountains pluton formed through partial melting of continental crust in a high heat-flow environment during the waning stages of Late Cretaceous subduction beneath interior Alaska. This map was published by the USGS and has been scanned, digitized, and attributed by DGGS staff. The dataset provides geologic, structural, stratigraphic, and geochronologic information organized according to the GeMS and AK GeMS mapping schemas. The complete report, geodatabase, and ESRI fonts and style files are available from the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys website: https://dggs.alaska.gov/pubs/id/24047. Purpose: This dataset provides a modern digital version of the original USGS geologic map of the Taylor Mountains area, enabling broader use of the information in current geologic, land-management, and resource-assessment workflows. By organizing the data into standardized GeMS and AK GeMS formats, it supports consistent interpretation of the region's geologic framework, mineral potential, and tectonic history. Making these data accessible in a GIS-ready form benefits Alaskans by improving the quality of information available for mineral exploration, infrastructure planning, environmental evaluation, and community decision-making. Supplemental_Information: This geodatabase is organized according to the AK GeMS mapping schema Hendricks, M.D., Macpherson, A.E., Athey, J.E., Wyatt, W.C., Montayne, Simone, Buchanan, Wes, Rivera, P.G., and Steinleitner, A.M., 2024, AK GeMS data dictionary: A description of the Alaska geologic mapping schema: Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys Miscellaneous Publication 170 v. 2, 13 p. https://doi.org/10.14509/31172. They recorded observations on aerial photographs and topographic bases, collected representative samples, and delineated geologic contacts and structural trends directly in the field. The team integrated field notes, sample data, and photogeologic interpretations to compile the original geologic map that forms the basis of this digital dataset. Process_Date: 2005 Process_Step: Process_Description: Geologic map conversion - DGGS staff scanned the original USGS paper map at high resolution, georeferenced it to modern coordinate standards, and digitized geologic contacts, structures, and map-unit polygons. They attributed all features following GeMS and AK GeMS schemas and completed quality-control checks for accuracy and schema compliance. Process_Date: 2025 Process_Step: Process_Description: Data packaging - DGGS organized and attributed the geologic and geographic features according to the AK GeMS schema, then programmatically transformed the data into four distribution formats: (1) an AK GeMS data package containing the full database and supporting files, (2) a GeMS data package converted to the USGS base standard, (3) a SQLite database file, and (4) a simplified shapefile package with shapefile representations of the data.
