    This project is part of the State of Alaska's Airborne Geophysical/Geological Mineral Inventory (AGGMI) program, a special multi-year investment by the state to expand Alaska's geologic and mineral resources knowledge base, catalyze future private-sector mineral exploration and development, and guide state planning. AGGMI was funded by the Alaska State Legislature and managed by the State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys. This geologic map was partly funded by the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program under STATEMAP award number 07HQAG0076, 2007 (fieldwork) and G20AC00367, 2020 (GeMS conversion). The State of Alaska General Fund provided additional funding. The views and conclusions contained in this document are those of the authors and should not be interpreted as necessarily representing the official policies, either expressed or implied, of the U.S. Government.

Why was the data set created?

Trace-element geochemistry for Nb, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr was obtained to help distinguish between igneous and sedimentary protoliths, and for igneous rocks to characterize and differentiate magmatic events in the area. The project area is of current and historic interest for potential mineral resource development.

    Field data collection - During June 2007, personnel from the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) and the University of Alaska Fairbanks spent approximately 189 person-days conducting field work in the northeast Fairbanks area.

    Sample selection - Rock samples were collected for two different purposes. First, samples of visibly mineralized or altered rock were preferentially collected and analyzed for trace-element geochemistry. Second, igneous and metaigneous rocks showing little alteration or weathering were collected for whole-rock major-oxide, minor-oxide, and trace-element analyses to aid in classification and study of petrogenesis and tectonic setting. Most samples are grab samples, which were collected for their overall representation of the outcrop. However, a few samples are select samples, which were more deliberately collected from a specific feature, as noted in the sample field description. Rock outcrop accounts for much less than one percent of the study area, consequently, many of the rock samples were collected from up to 1-meter-deep pits dug with shovels into rocky colluvial deposits below the surficial loess.

    Trace-element values for Nb, Rb, Sr, Y, and Zr were determined at the University of Alaska Fairbanks by XRF on a pressed pellet. Lower and upper detection limits for the trace-element analyses are 0.01 and 100 ppm, respectively.
