Between 1974 and 1982, more than 12,000 line miles of seismic data were acquired in the reserve (U.S. Geological Survey [USGS], 2019), and USGS geospatial data show the approximate locations of 99,850 holes, up to 175 feet deep, drilled for emplaced seismic charges. At each site, drillers logged the hole and collected grab samples of material brought to the surface. Drill cards and samples from roughly 35,650 of these sites, drilled between 1974 and 1981, are archived at the Alaska Geologic Materials Center (GMC) in Anchorage. Using these materials, the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) photographed the cards and samples and tabulated transcriptions of drillers' observation notes from approximately 26,000 of the sites, which fall within a data extent of almost 100,000 km2. This subset is the portion of the archive closest to North Slope communities and potential infrastructure development. The dataset is foundational to a broader initiative to modernize and enhance the NPR-A seismic shothole sample dataset, and it supports local and regional efforts to identify economically viable sand and gravel deposits. These data and accompanying discussion are released as a DGGS Digital Data Series publication, and all publication components are available from the DGGS website at https://doi.org/10.14509/32137.
<purpose>This dataset supports discoverability and reuse of historical seismic shothole records from NPR-A. It provides photographs of drill cards and geologic samples and transcribed driller notes from approximately 26,000 shothole sites drilled between 1974 and 1981 to facilitate identification of sand and gravel resources and planning for infrastructure development on the North Slope.</purpose><supplinf>The NPR-A seismic shothole dataset offers a unique regional record of shallow subsurface materials on the North Slope that would be cost prohibitive to replicate, and while it cannot support quantitative modeling, it provides a starting point for further investigation and informed infrastructure planning.

Collecting detailed subsurface data was outside the scope of the NPR-A seismic program, so drill card descriptions are inconsistent, and many cards are missing, damaged, or illegible. Gravel is likely significantly overrepresented because drillers used overlapping terms for coarse-grained alluvial and colluvial materials and crushed bedrock, and shallow coal is rarely noted but appears to be widespread. The data are not suitable for quantitative resource estimates, and users should review the drill card and sample images directly and not rely solely on the transcribed text.</attraccr></attracc><logic>Each shothole record is linked by shotline and shothole number to its location in the USGS NPR-A legacy seismic data archive, its sample images, and, where present, its drill card transcription. Catalogers verified that each drill card matched its sample bag label and could be linked to the sample identifiers in the USGS archive record. Sample labels were corrected against the USGS shotline and shothole dataset. Transcribed text reproduces the original driller notes, with obvious spelling errors corrected, text standardized to lowercase, and multiline entries combined into single lines. Where interval depths were not recorded but a total hole depth was given, the interval top was assumed to be zero and the bottom was assumed to be the total depth. Cards with no depth information are flagged interval missing. Shorthand and terminology were not standardized to a controlled vocabulary, so lithologic terms are inconsistent across records.</logic><complete>The dataset is incomplete relative to the full NPR-A seismic program. USGS data show approximately 99,850 shotholes drilled between 1974 and 1982 (USGS, 2019). Drill cards and samples from roughly 35,650 of these sites are archived at the Alaska Geologic Materials Center, and this dataset covers approximately 26,000 of them, the portion closest to North Slope communities and potential infrastructure development. Only about half of the selected samples have a drill card, and many cards are missing, damaged, or difficult to read. Records without a card have no transcription, and cards lacking depth information are flagged interval missing. Only key data (mainly interval depths and material characteristics) were transcribed.</complete><posacc><horizpa><horizpar>Horizontal positional accuracy has not been quantified. Shothole locations were established during seismic surveys in 1974 to 1982, before GPS was available, and were located with survey and navigation methods of that era. This dataset uses the locations obtained from the USGS dataset and did not independently verify them. Locations may be offset from the true drill sites by 100s of meters or more, and errors may vary by shotline, survey contractor, and year. Users who need precise locations should not rely on these coordinates alone.</horizpar></horizpa></posacc><lineage><procstep><procdesc>Sample location, cataloging, and photography - Geologic material samples and drill cards from individual shothole drill locations, collected during NPR-A seismic investigations (1974 to 1981), were stored in labeled sample bags in boxes at the Alaska Geologic Materials Center (GMC). Staff located specific boxes using the GMC online inventory database, which lists the shotline number, shothole number, and box identification barcode. Sample bags within each box were labeled with the shothole and shotline numbers. Staff obtained the geographic location of each sample and shotline from the NPR-A Legacy Seismic Data Archive (USGS, 2019), reviewed each box label, and compiled cataloging information for each shothole sample. Catalogers verified that each drill card (when present) matched the sample bag label and could be linked to the sample identifiers in the USGS archive record. They placed the drill card and sample bag on a flat surface, disaggregated the sample, arranged it on a glass plate with the bag beside it, and photographed the setup. When applicable, they spread the sample material across plates to capture key sediments, such as pebbles or coal fragments. After photographing, they returned the samples to their original bags and boxes at the GMC.</procdesc><procdate>2025</procdate></procstep><procstep><procdesc>Drill card transcription - Staff reviewed photographs of shothole drill cards (present for roughly half of the selected samples) and transcribed key data useful for geologic material resource exploration, particularly interval depths and material descriptions. Where interval depths were not recorded but a total hole depth was given, the interval top was assumed to be zero and the bottom the total depth.
