Publication_Date: 2024 Title: Digitized legacy maps of surficial geology and morphology of the central Arctic Coastal Plain, Alaska Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: geodatabase Series_Information: Series_Name: Data Release Issue_Identification: Giesche, A.M. and others, 2024 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: United States Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: https://dggs.alaska.gov/pubs/id/31429 Description: Abstract: Digitized legacy maps of surficial geology and morphology of the central Arctic Coastal Plain, Alaska, Data Release, provides a digitized version of Rawlinson's 1993 surficial geologic map, covering the Flaxman Island and Beechy Point quadrangles, plus parts of Mount Michelson and Harrison Bay, at 1:63,360 scale (Rawlinson, 1993, https://doi.org/10.14509/2484). In 2024, USGS staff scanned, georeferenced, and projected the maps into GIS and corrected typographic and labeling errors with input from the author. DGGS staff subsequently converted these files into the GeMS geodatabase standard. The complete report, geodatabase, and ESRI fonts and style files are available from the DGGS website: https://dggs.alaska.gov/pubs/31429. Purpose: This digital geologic data conversion product is intended to facilitate multi-map merging of adjacent work by USGS and State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) staff. Supplemental_Information: This geodatabase is organized according to the Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) standard published as Techniques and Methods 11-B10 by the USGS. The conversion was performed within the framework and mechanisms of the Alaska Geologic Mapping System's AK GeMS mapping schema Hendricks, M.D., Ekberg, P.G., Athey, J.E., Wyatt, W.C., Willingham, A.L., and Naibert, T.J., 2021, AK GeMS data dictionary: A description of the Alaska geologic mapping schema: Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys Miscellaneous Publication 170, 10 p. https://doi.org/10.14509/30669. The distribution package includes ESRI fonts and style files, along with usage instructions. Further documentation of the symbology is provided by Ekberg, P.G., Hendricks, M.D., and Athey, J.E., 2021, AK GeMS symbology: A description of the AK GeMS style file: Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys Miscellaneous Publication 169, 7 p. https://doi.org/10.14509/30584 Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Range_of_Dates/Times: Beginning_Date: 1968 Ending_Date: 2025 Currentness_Reference: ground condition Status: Progress: complete Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: None planned Spatial_Domain: Bounding_Coordinates: West_Bounding_Coordinate: -151.278616 East_Bounding_Coordinate: -143.656152 North_Bounding_Coordinate: 70.798955 South_Bounding_Coordinate: 69.614530 Keywords: Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: ISO 19115 Topic Category Theme_Keyword: geoscientificInformation Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys Theme_Keyword: Alluvial Theme_Keyword: Alluvium Theme_Keyword: Aufeis Theme_Keyword: Channel Theme_Keyword: Chert Theme_Keyword: Clay Theme_Keyword: Coastal Theme_Keyword: Colluvium Theme_Keyword: Conglomerate Theme_Keyword: Depositional Environment Theme_Keyword: Diabase Theme_Keyword: Diamictite Theme_Keyword: Diamictons Theme_Keyword: Dolomite Theme_Keyword: Dunes Theme_Keyword: Eolian Theme_Keyword: Fluvial Theme_Keyword: GeMS DB L3 Compliant Theme_Keyword: GeMS DB v2 Theme_Keyword: Geobarometry Theme_Keyword: Geologic Map Theme_Keyword: Geologic Materials Theme_Keyword: Geological Process Theme_Keyword: Geology Theme_Keyword: Geomorphology Theme_Keyword: Geotechnical Theme_Keyword: Glacial Deposits Theme_Keyword: Glacial Drift Theme_Keyword: Glacial Geomorphology Theme_Keyword: Glacial History Theme_Keyword: Glacial Processes Theme_Keyword: Glacioestuarine Deposits Theme_Keyword: Ice Contact Deposits Theme_Keyword: Lacustrine Theme_Keyword: Lacustrine Sedimentation Theme_Keyword: Marine Transgressions Theme_Keyword: Neoglacial Theme_Keyword: Paleoclimate Theme_Keyword: Paleoenvironment Theme_Keyword: Permafrost Theme_Keyword: Permafrost and Periglacial Theme_Keyword: Pingos Theme_Keyword: Related ASTAR Reference Theme_Keyword: Sand Theme_Keyword: Sand and Gravel Theme_Keyword: Sandbar Progradation Theme_Keyword: Sea Level Changes Theme_Keyword: Sedimentary Theme_Keyword: Sedimentation Theme_Keyword: Surficial Theme_Keyword: Thaw Lakes Theme_Keyword: Thermokarst Place: Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys Place_Keyword: Alpine Place_Keyword: Anachlik Island Place_Keyword: Anajuk Point Place_Keyword: Big Lake Place_Keyword: Bullen Place_Keyword: Canning River Place_Keyword: Canning Valley Place_Keyword: Carter Creek Place_Keyword: Colville River Place_Keyword: Colville River Delta Place_Keyword: Deadhorse Place_Keyword: Fawn Creek Place_Keyword: Foggy Island Place_Keyword: Hulahula River Place_Keyword: Itkillik River Place_Keyword: Kadleroshilik River Place_Keyword: Kajutakrok Creek Place_Keyword: Kalubik Creek Place_Keyword: Katakturuk River Place_Keyword: Kavik River Place_Keyword: Kuparuk River Place_Keyword: Kuparuk River Delta Place_Keyword: Lake Africa Place_Keyword: Marsh Creek Place_Keyword: Microblade Lake Place_Keyword: Miluveach River Place_Keyword: Nanuk Lake Place_Keyword: North Slope Borough Coastal District Place_Keyword: Nuiqsut Place_Keyword: Nularvik River Place_Keyword: Oil Lake Place_Keyword: Okpilak River Place_Keyword: Put River Place_Keyword: Putuligayuk River Place_Keyword: Sadlerochit River Place_Keyword: Sagavanirktok River Place_Keyword: Sagavanirktok River Delta Place_Keyword: Sakonowyak River Place_Keyword: Shaviovik River Place_Keyword: Simpson Lagoon Place_Keyword: Staines River Place_Keyword: Tamayariak River Place_Keyword: Tutkiya Place_Keyword: Ugnuravik River Temporal: Temporal_Keyword_Thesaurus: Walker, J.D., Geissman, J.W., Bowring, S.A, and Babcock, L.E., comp., 2012, Geologic Time Scale v. 4.0: Geological Society of America Temporal_Keyword: Holocene Temporal_Keyword: Quaternary Temporal_Keyword: Tertiary Access_Constraints: This report, map, and/or dataset is available directly from the State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (see contact information below). Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: This data release provides legacy USGS geologic mapping converted to the GeMS and AK GeMS specifications. The data compilers used map symbology to determine positional accuracy. The data pairs descriptive fields within each feature class with location confidence lookup tables to record the originating authors' degree of confidence in the location of features. When location accuracy values are unavailable, users must infer positional accuracy based on standard geologic mapping practices of the investigation era. Certainty in feature boundaries or location varies throughout the map. Lineage: Source_Information: Source_Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: Ekberg, P.G. Due to technological limitations in the 1980s, only low-resolution 1:250,000-scale black-and-white Landsat imagery was available for reference. Fieldwork conducted between 1981 and 1985 supported the photointerpretation, focusing on exposed areas along coasts, rivers, and gravel pits. This map incorporated data from 464 measured stratigraphic sections and 678 samples analyzed for grain size, radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dating, amino acid analysis, wood identification, and microfossil and pollen content. In 2024, the original paper maps were scanned, georeferenced, and digitized into GIS by USGS staff , with 100-200 typographic and labeling errors corrected in consultation with the original author. The digitized version retains the original 1993 interpretation of surficial geology and does not incorporate newer geological insights. Process_Date: 2024 Process_Step: Process_Description: GIS analysis and digital cartography - This data distribution package's geologic and geographic features were organized and attributed according to the AK GeMS geologic mapping schema. The legacy data were programmatically transformed to provide download options in three formats: (1) an AK GeMS data package that includes the complete AK GeMS database and associated files, (2) a GeMS data package that is a conversion of the AK GeMS database into the base GeMS standard published by the USGS, and (3) a shapefile data package that includes two simple shapefile representations of the data.
