Abstract

Geothermal exploration of Makushin Volcano, Unalaska Island, included mapping of all geothermal manifestations, and a survey of the mercury content of soils. Twenty three groups of fumaroles, hot springs, and/or warm ground were identified and examined, while superheated fumaroles were discovered at two sites. The mercury soil survey outlined six anomalous areas that contained over 324 ppb mercury. The largest anomaly, which covers approximately 50 square kilometers, appears to define the geothermal resource.
