• Description:

  An ongoing project involving the new hyperspectral scanner housed at the Geologic Materials Center funded by National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP). Phase 1 (FY 2022) included the purchasing of a hyperspectral scanner for the imaging and high-resolution photography of samples from proven and potential Alaska mineral and energy resources. Phase 2 (FY 2023) supported the scanner installation and the scanning test phase. Phase 3 (FY 2024) involved the development of a production workflow for the hyperspectral scanner with the intent to optimize the entire core scanning process, from core handling to data management and public distribution of elemental and mineral information on the borehole cores held at the facility. Phase 4 (FY2025) intends to produce hyperspectral scans of 7000 core boxes during the grant period drawn from a prioritized list of boreholes with critical mineral and other resource potential. Additionally, DGGS will produce a set of Standard Operating Procedures based on real-world experience operating the hyperspectral scanner. DGGS will develop automatic indexing and a custom indexing scheme for the scanner data focused on geochemical information, along with building out a new search interface based on user feedback, and geospatial and non-geospatial results returns for users.
