This project produced a large geologic map and series of reports on the bedrock geology, surficial geology, stratigraphy, and tectonics of the Sadlerochit and Shublik mountains, which were published from 1986 to 1990. Per Gil Mull: John Decker was the head of ENSAP, which was primarily aimed at assessment of ANWR when there was still optimism that there might be some ANWR land released for leasing. The Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) was passed by Congress in 1980 with a provision for additional exploration for assessment of the potential of the 1002 coastal plain area of ANWR. Exploration was defined as surface activities which could be geophysical studies and surface mapping, but no drilling. Industry was not permitted access. DGGS had a small staff of experienced mappers (Decker, Dillon, Gar Pessel, Mark Robinson) so with that opportunity, DGGS was able to get funding from the legislature for helicopters for summer field mapping.Project Date(s):
