Projects and/or Research Interests

As Chief of the Engineering Geology Section, I provide administrative, supervisory, and technical leadership for the Division's geologic hazards and construction materials resources programs and projects, and conceive and implement multi-disciplinary, strategic applied programs in the general areas of engineering geology, surficial geology, and remote sensing to solve geologic problems. I am Agency Representative on the board administering the Alaska Quaternary Center, which is committed to the promotion of interdisciplinary research and the enhancement of interdisciplinary instruction in Quaternary sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.

My main research focus areas are surficial-geologic mapping, Quaternary studies, permafrost and periglacial processes, geologic hazards, construction materials resources, and the use of satellite remote sensing for geologic applications. Past areas of research have included tephrochronology and industrial minerals. I have a long and abiding interest in Beringian paleontology and the interdisciplinary wonders of geoarcheology.

I have conducted numerous surficial-geologic field mapping and engineering-geology studies throughout Alaska from the Brooks Range to the Kenai Peninsula, and from the Canada border to the Alaska and Seward Peninsulas.
