To help DGGS determine the potential of Alaskan land for production of metals and minerals, the Mineral Resources Section collects, analyzes, and makes available new information on the geological and geophysical framework of Alaska, as it pertains to the state's mineral resources. Summary maps, surveys, and reports illustrate the geology of the state's prospective mineral terranes and provide data on the location, type, and potential of the state's mineral resources. These data aid in the state's management of its lands and help attract industry investment and encourage mineral exploration in Alaska, which, in turn, provides employment opportunities and revenue for the state and its citizens. The Mineral Resources Section also publishes an annual Alaska Mineral Industry report to fulfill the department's responsibility under Alaska Statue 27.05.050-060.
In January 2026, DGGS released Special Report 78, a report highlighting Alaska's critical minerals potential, exploration incentive strategies, comparison of Alaska's permitting and exploration incentives to other jurisdictions, and current and projected critical minerals production in Alaska.
